Auckland Airport routes for APEC
Auckland City Council - City Scene
Next month's APEC leaders' meeting will affect traffic travelling across Auckland City, as well as in the central city area.
Last week's 'City Scene' carried a map showing the central city roads which will be closed for security reasons from early Saturday, September 11 to the evening of Monday, September 13.
Of the three routes which the police have identified for bringing the APEC delegations to and from the airport, the Southern Motorway will be the most affected when the leaders arrive on Saturday, September 11, and depart on Monday, September 13.
The northbound lane is likely to be closed at times on Saturday with the southbound lane similarly affected on Monday evening. Two alternative routes involving The Drive and Mt Eden Road are also liable to be used for the APEC delegations, although these routes will not be fully closed to other traffic.
The police are aiming to reduce normal traffic flows by up to 50% on the busiest day of the APEC leaders' meeting, Monday September 13, and have issued a list of suggestions to help reduce traffic volumes during APEC.
The tips include:
Saturday
11 September: Avoid driving in the city centre and
northbound on the motorway from the Redoubt Rd (Manukau)
interchange through to the Nelson St. offramp.
Sunday 12 September: Avoid driving in the city centre
Monday 13
September: Avoid driving to and from the central city during
usual peak periods and within the city centre all day. Avoid
the southbound lane of the motorway in the evening from the
Hobson St off-ramp to the Redoubt Rd (Manukau) interchange.
