Auckland City Council will be open for business during next month's APEC conference, but with fewer staff on duty in its central city premises.

Many Auckland City staff will work from home or take a day off on Monday 13 September to help reduce the amount of traffic travelling in and around the city centre. The police have asked central city businesses to help reduce normal traffic volumes by at least 50% on
“APEC Monday", when United States President Bill Clinton and 20 other government leaders will hold their main meeting at the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

The leaders will travel in motorcades to the Domain at the normal peak morning traffic times and return to their hotels in the afternoon.

The route, including Waterloo Quadrant, Alten Road and Stanley Street, will be closed to other traffic while the motorcades are on the move.

Traffic will be further affected during the evening, when many of the leaders are expected to leave for the airport. APEC organisers say a major publicity campaign will be aimed at helping to keep traffic to a minimum during the conference. Leaflets, newspaper and radio advertisements will encourage people to leave their cars at home.

A special 0800 telephone number will also be available to provide up to date information on traffic and any changes to public transport timetables and routes.
