Day One Tamaki Makaurau/2000
Auckland City Council - City Scene
Don't just watch it. Do it! Aucklanders of every age and origin are being urged to join in the city's millennium celebrations.
Taking part in a mass haka is just one of the ways to get involved - with up to 2000 people expected to join a special Millennium version to be performed at Okahu Bay in the early hours of New Year's Day.
The mass haka will greet the arrival of a Millennium flotilla at Okahu Bay during the New Year's Day dawn ceremony: Day One - Tamaki Makaurau 2000.
Up to 800 million people around the world are likely to see the Day One haka on television, as part of the 2000 Today international TV coverage.
The specially scripted haka is open to all-comers, with tuition provided free to groups by Ngati-Whatua haka trainers.
Groups interested in joining the Millennium haka are invited to contact the Day One organisers, Hegan Productions 09 360 6902; fax 09 360 6903 or e-mail at HYPERLINK mailto:firstname.lastname@example.org #- email@example.com.
