Trade Me Launches “Shop By Request” Service

Trade Me (www.trademe.co.nz) today released an exciting new online shopping service – designed to provide shoppers with a quick and easy way to get in touch with retailers. The service, tagged Shop by Request, provides consumers with the ability to quickly formulate a request for a product to retailers and then receive recommendations and prices from retailers in their inbox.

“We’ve all had the ‘Let your fingers do the walking’ message drummed into us for years, but people are simply too busy to shop around for commodity purchases.” Managing Director Sam Morgan says. “Shop by Request provides our users with the ability to receive information one-on-one from retailers when they can’t find what they want in our auction market.”

Retailers benefit from the service by receiving qualified leads and the ability to one-on-one market to potential buyers, using email. The service is expected to provide retailers with significantly lower costs of customer acquisition than traditional advertising where costs typically range from $50-$80 per customer.

“Trade Me has over 50,000 visitors each week and nearly 30,000 registered users. The cost to an e-tailer of establishing this size consumer base has become prohibitive since venture capital has become scarce.” Morgan says “We have liquidity in our market on day one.”

Shop by Request has been released in the Computing and Electronics categories, with retailers such as MicroDirect and Ascent signing up. Trade Me is targeting several new categories, including Travel, for the coming weeks.
