Court decision relating to MAF vets appealed

Media release 15 February 2001

Employers' Federation appeals Employment Court decision relating to MAF vets

The NZ Employers' Federation has filed an appeal against an Employment Court ruling which relates to threatened industrial action by MAF vets.

Employers' Federation chief executive Anne Knowles says the Federation is appealing the decision delivered on 13 February which upheld unions' rights to be registered under the Employment Relations Act before it was passed.

The National Union of Public Employees, which represents veterinarians employed by MAF, was one of a number of unions registered before the Act was passed on 2 October last year.

Ms Knowles says the Federation's action is in response to requests by Federated Farmers and the Meat Industry Association, and is aimed at gaining certainty for employers in a disputed area.
