Don't Get Caught Short This Winter

Federated Farmers of New Zealand President Alistair Polson has expressed concern at reports of feed shortages and the poor condition of stock in Marlborough, North Otago, South Canterbury and Mid Canterbury.

"This is an issue for the whole industry. FFNZ are aware some farmers are struggling with feed shortages and I would urge them to seek help before the situation becomes desperate," said Mr Polson.

"Green grass is an essential component of an animal's diet at this time of year," Mr Polson said. "Pasture levels in much of the South Island were less than desirable at the beginning of winter and for many that situation has not improved."

"FFNZ provincial leaders and MAF are monitoring the situation closely to ensure that we are not faced with animal welfare issues as the season progresses. Given the poor condition of some stock it would only take a minor climatic event to create major problems."
