NZ Business In Shock, Wants To Assist

New Zealand businesses have been calling the Employers & Manufacturers Association expressing their shock and seeking ways to assist in the aftermath of the attacks on America.

"New Zealand business is acutely aware of the ramifications of the attacks on the world economy and the risk they present to world peace," said Alasdair Thompson, EMA's chief executive.

"Markets will be disrupted. We expect financial markets to slump. The price of oil could soar.

"Trade with the US and tourism will be hit though likely to recover by the year's end.

"Inquiries are also centring on when air cargo might be expected to resume. The optimistic outlook is that North American air space will be re-opened by Sunday this week.

"EMA's contact centre - tel 09 367 0900 - is being briefed regularly on developments in the US, Canada and the UK for businesses seeking trade information.

"Along with people everywhere, New Zealand's business community joins in expressing our heartfelt condolences to the American people. Our prayers are with those who are suffering."
