MVDI welcomes Motor Vehicle Sales Bill

The Motor Vehicle Dealers Institute (MVDI) today welcomed the introduction of the Motor Vehicle Sales Bill into the House after many years of battling to change the legislation controlling the motor vehicle dealing industry in New Zealand.

“The laws proposed in the Bill are a step in the right direction,” said MVDI Executive Director Steve Downes. “We welcome this legislation as a move that will benefit both vehicle buyers and the vehicle sales industry.”

Mr Downes said the Bill contained important new protections for vehicle buyers and proposals that would substantially change the way the vehicle sales industry operated.

“The Bill proposes to guarantee title for vehicle buyers, ensure buyers get accurate information and give them better redress if things go wrong. We are confident that the new legislation will put an end to illegal trading as it will cover car fairs, auction houses, importers, wholesalers and anyone else (except private individuals) who sells vehicles. It will enable unsuitable people to be banned from the industry,” he said.

Parts of the existing 25-year-old Act were no longer relevant and an overhaul was long overdue. The legislation would change the role and responsibilities of the MVDI and would create a number of new opportunities for the organisation, including the provision of increased services and benefits for dealers and consumers.

“We hope to continue working closely and productively with the Government as it consults the public and the industry on the Bill,” Mr Downes said.
