Further Growth in Quarterly Retail Sales

Further Growth in Quarterly Retail Sales

Seasonally adjusted total retail sales increased 1.4 percent in the December 2002 quarter compared with the September 2002 quarter, according to Statistics New Zealand. This was the result of monthly increases of 0.8 percent in October, 0.5 percent in November and 0.4 percent in December.

The growth this quarter was again widespread, with 11 out of the 15 storetypes recording higher seasonally adjusted sales, compared with the September 2002 quarter. The largest contributors to the increase in seasonally adjusted sales were the motor vehicle services and food retailing storetypes. The largest decrease was recorded by the motor vehicle retailing storetype, which fell by 1.3 percent.

The volume of total seasonally adjusted retail sales increased 1.3 percent in the December 2002 quarter, compared with the September 2002 quarter. This is the eighth consecutive quarterly increase in sales volumes.

Regional growth remains strong this quarter, with all regions, apart from the Canterbury region (down 0.1 percent), recording higher seasonally adjusted sales compared with the September 2002 quarter. The largest increase occurred in the Auckland region, which increased 2.0 percent.
