Auckland Commercial Radio Audience Measurement Survey T1/2003

The first round of the Auckland 2003 Commercial Radio Audience Measurement Surveys conducted by Research International was released today at noon.

Department of Statistics 2001 Census data indicates that there are approximately 905,300 people aged over 10 years in the Auckland survey area used for the Radio Audience Measurement Survey. Of these 905,300 people, 88.3% of them listen to a commercial radio station at some time during the week.

The survey, conducted over 6 weeks and sampling 3,310 people aged 10 years and over has found that Newstalk ZB continues to have the most listeners each week, with 208,600 different people tuning in each week. ZM91.0 moves up to second place with 166,400 different listeners each week, followed by MoreFM Auckland with 148,400 listeners. Classic Hits 97.4FM move up to fourth place with 147,600 listeners each week and Mai FM88.6 moves to fifth place with 142,700 different listeners each week. The survey shows that market newcomer The Edge 94.2FM has 81,100 different listeners each week.

The commercial radio station with the highest market share in Auckland remains Newstalk ZB with a 13.6% share of the market. Classic Hits 97.4FM moves up to second placed station with a 9.2% share of commercial radio listening in Auckland, followed by Mai FM88.6 moving to third place with an 8.1% share. ZM91.0 move up to fourth in the market with a 6.8% share, and Easy Listening i98FM move up to fifth in the market with a 5.8% share. The Edge 94.2FM enters the Auckland market with a 2.8% share of all commercial radio listening in Auckland

Breakfast results show Newstalk ZB continuing to hold the highest share, with 19.9% of the commercial radio breakfast market, followed by Classic Hits 97.4FM moving up to second placing with a 9.1% share. Mai FM88.6 and ZM91.0 take third equal placing this round with a 7.1% share of the breakfast market. More FM Auckland moves to fourth place with a 6.3% share of commercial breakfast listening. Retaining fifth position is Easy Listening i98FM with a 5.2% share of the commercial radio breakfast market. The Edge 94.2FM enters the Auckland commercial radio breakfast market with a 2.3% share of listening.

The margin of error on these results is ±1.7%
