Caltex Winner Environmental Packaging Awards

Caltex Supreme Winner At 2003 Environmental Packaging Awards

Caltex Lubricants New Zealand and Vertex Pacific Ltd have been named the Supreme winners at this year’s Excellence for Environmentally Acceptable Packaging Awards.

The award was presented for a revolutionary 60-litre drum design. The product was designed and manufactured by NZX-listed packaging specialist Vertex Pacific Ltd. The drum design, which ChevronTexaco use to store oil, also won the 3M category for Excellence in Innovation in Design. It is made from recycled plastic milk containers, and when it has been used several times the plastic is recycled once more for other company products.

Caltex New Zealand’s brand and corporate communications manager, Niall Kramer said the award recognises the company’s commitment towards developing a leading industry standard of environmental best practice.

“We recognise the relationship each area of the business has with the environment, and we invest a significant amount of resource to ensure each and every detail is considered,” he said.

“Vertex Pacific have played an instrumental role in this project, and the success highlights both the importance and benefits of partnerships in developing a leading standard of practice.

Judges said the design was selected for its minimal use of material, its recyclable characteristics and that the entire product lifecycle had been considered throughout the design process.

Minister for the Environment, the Hon. Marion Hobbs and 200 delegates within the packaging industry attended the evening, where the Minister presented 22 awards covering 10 categories.

The awards were introduced in 1999, and recognise those who are making a significant contribution to improve the environmental performance of packaging, packaging systems and environmental education, or the operation of their manufacturing facilities.
