Over $1,000 raised for Russell Kiwi Project!

Alternative energy and household cleaners were popular exhibits at the Environmental Expo held in Russell at the weekend.

But so were the displays of local government and the Department of Conservation and other groups raising awareness of the need of sustainability in the Far North.

The hall had been earlier decorated with the prizewinning banners from schools and groups in the Far North depicting Conservation in their Community, for which the Mayor of the Far North District had donated $300 prize money from her Mayoral Fund. First prize went to the Mahinepua Kaitiaki, second to Russell Play Centre and third prize to the Pepis from Kaitaia.

“But they were all excellent,” said her Worship, Yvonne Sharp, at the opening. “All thirteen on display here today show the care and respect that our younger generation are showing for the community in which they live.”

Visitors came from all over the Bay of Islands and as far afield as Auckland and were greeted with wonderful weather in Russell. Many people commented that they were not aware of the advances being made to reduce pollution – and the way in which householders and ratepayers could play a part.

Local firefighters attended and added to the theme of ‘Conservation in the Community’, the message for this year’s Conservation Week which begins today.

A Cape Brett Walk and a basket of Ecostore products were popular raffle prizes, and lucky door prizes of Living Nature products went to winners from Whangaruru and Whangarei.

“Best ever!” said one local who had been to all four expos held in Russell.

For those with a strong environmental message the Expo will be held in Russell again at the end of July next year.

By the conclusion of the event over $1,000 had been raised for the Russell Kiwi Project.
