New Hoyts Cinema marks completion of Westfield Riccarton development

The official opening tomorrow of the new Hoyts Riccarton cinema by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon Helen Clark, marks the completion of the $90 million redevelopment of Westfield Riccarton.

The Westfield Riccarton development now offers shoppers the latest in fashion, food, leisure and entertainment facilities creating a premier destination for the local community and wider Christchurch market including:

- A new six screen Hoyts Club Class Cinema complex boasting the largest purpose built 35mm screen and cinema in Christchurch, and state of the art projection equipment.
- 130 retail stores;
- 2,400 car parks;
- an expanded and refurbished Pak ‘n Save;
- an expanded Farmers Department Store;
- an expanded Noel Leming store;
- new Rebel and Briscoe stores;
- 50 additional specialty stores.
- Rotherham Street alfresco dining area
- Increase in centre GLA to approx 46,000 m2

Westfield Group – NZ, Director John Widdup says the Riccarton project is one part of a national investment programme that will see the company invest approximately $700m into redevelopment and refurbishment of shopping centres in NZ during the next four years.

The redevelopment has represented a significant investment for the Christchurch economy, generating approximately 800 permanent jobs in the retail industry, and up to 1,300 jobs in the construction industry.

“Our investment at Westfield Riccarton demonstrates our strong commitment to retail in this country,” Mr Widdup says.
