Overseas Cargo Statistics: Year ended June 2005

Cargo Values Rise

The value of export cargo loaded and import cargo unloaded at New Zealand ports rose by 2.3 percent and 8.4 percent, respectively, during the June 2005 year, Statistics New Zealand said today. Over the same period, the weight of export cargo loaded fell by 3.1 percent and the weight of import cargo unloaded rose by 8.2 percent.

The port of Tauranga recorded the largest rise in the value of export cargo loaded during the June 2005 year, compared with the June 2004 year. The main commodities contributing to this increase were food preparations; kiwifruit; iron and steel; and tyres. Following Tauranga, Auckland Airport recorded the second largest rise in the value of export cargo loaded. These rises were partly offset by a fall in the value of export cargo loaded at the port of Napier.

The port of Tauranga also recorded the largest rise in the value of import cargo unloaded during the June 2005 year, compared with the June 2004 year. The main commodities contributing to this increase were electrical machinery; plastics; and mechanical machinery.
