Seafood industry welcomes biosecurity funding

Seafood industry welcomes biosecurity funding decision

14th August 2006

The New Zealand Seafood Industry Council welcomes the Minister of Biosecurity, Jim Anderton's announcement today that Biosecurity New Zealand will redirect $150,000 from other pest management programmes to support Didemnum vexillum pest management activities, developed by the mussel industry, in the Marlborough region, said Chief Executive Owen Symmans.

"The mussel industry, who have developed the management programme, will be pleased. The didemnum threat is a very real and serious one for marine farming in New Zealand. We're very happy that the Minister has recognised the significance of aquaculture to our community and economy and has taken steps to protect it," Mr Symmans said.
