Guide Enables Writers to Negotiate a Better Deal

New Guide Will Enable Contractors to Negotiate a Better Deal
NZWG Media Release – 233 words

The New Zealand Writers Guild has released a new guide that will enable contractors to negotiate a better deal for themselves.

"Contractors miss out on a range of rights and privileges afforded to employees," said NZWG Executive Director Dominic Sheehan . "These are benefits that employees take for granted, such as a minimum amount of annual leave, paid public holidays, sick and bereavement leave and a mandated grievance procedure ."

"The contractor relationship was originally designed to provide a flexible working relationship but today it's often used by employers to avoid the responsibilities they would normally have to employees. Contractors might be fooled into thinking they're getting a good deal but our experience is that in the big picture they would be better off being employees."

“We’ve prepared this comparison so that contractors understand exactly what they are missing out on. We hope they will be able to use this information to negotiate better conditions for themselves.”

The guide is now available from the NZWG. "You don't need to be a member of the NZWG to obtain a copy,” says Sheehan. “ We encourage any contractor who is interested in improving their situation or any employee who is being encouraged to become a contractor to get this guide."

Also available from the NZWG is A Guide to Negotiating Contracts, a concise list of contract negotiating tips.

Both guides are available in PDF format.
