Apprenticeship Programme key to Success with Sky City

- Hospitality Standards Institute Supports Emerging Talent -


SkyCity is finding running the Modern Apprenticeship hospitality apprenticeship programme to be an effective way to attract, develop and retain talent in the current tight labour market.

SkyCity has offered the apprenticeship programme for six years and more than 11 apprentices have qualified during this time. Sky City currently has 19 hospitality apprentices working throughout its business.

A key ingredient of SkyCity’s apprenticeship programme is support from Hospitality Standards Institute (HSI) modern apprenticeship co-ordinators. Their support is proving successful not only for SkyCity, but also for the apprentices who are supported and guided throughout their learning.

SkyCity’s Group Executive Chef, Warren Bias believes it gives the candidates the skills to become an integral part of the industry, which can often lead to enhanced job opportunities.

“The HSI apprenticeship scheme is fantastic. Students can earn while they learn and don’t rack up huge student loans as they work towards their qualification,” said Warren.

SkyCity apprentices experience working in 15 different kitchens during their three years. During their time they start with the basics and move through. The scheme is designed to find their individual skill sets.

“The apprentices can put the theory into practice straight away which really contributes to meaningful leaning. The apprenticeships are hands-on and industry-based,” said Warren.

Modern apprenticeships last between two and three years and the Hospitality Standards Institute supports students every step of the way. There are two learning pathways to choose from: Modern Apprenticeship in Cookery and the Modern Apprenticeship in Food and Beverage Service. HSI’s guidance through the apprenticeship ensures candidates are supported and are able to act as a third party for advice and help with the training agreement.

“HSI’s support is apparent throughout the candidates’ three years and they really help facilitate the apprenticeship for all parties involved,” said Warren.
