Westfield Chartwell Extension Opens

Westfield celebrates the successful completion of the retail centre extension

Today’s opening of Westfield Chartwell’s new extension marks the completion of the retail component of the redevelopment project in Hamilton. As part of Westfield’s ongoing commitment to its shopping centre group, $40 million has been invested in the enhancement of the centre.

The redevelopment of the shopping complex, completed today, includes an expanded Foodtown, a new food court with 450 seats, 24 new specialty stores and kiosks, and a new multi-level car park building providing 270 undercover car spaces.

“We’re delighted to have successfully completed this component of the centre, with the addition of leading retailers and enhancements to the established areas of the complex,” said Justin Lynch, Deputy Director of Westfield New Zealand. “We are also pleased to be contributing to the growth in the Hamilton area through the creation of jobs and by attracting more visitors to our shopping centre,” he said.

The re-development work began in November 2005. In August of this year Foodtown completed their expansion and today the new upgraded retail area and new food court opens. The final stage, expected to open early to mid 2007, will be celebrated with the opening of SKYCITY Cinemas in 2007.

“Westfield is proud to have created another modern retail centre for the enjoyment of the people of Hamilton, the Waikato Region and other visitors to the area. SKYCITY Cinemas will provide the entertainment focal point”, said Justin Lynch.

The new stores also feature children’s clothing chain Pumpkin Patch and several popular women and men’s fashion stores. Leading food and beverage operators have also joined the food court.

“The redevelopment has provided us with the opportunity to make enhancements to the existing centre interior and exterior with improved lighting, new entrances, new balustrades, a new escalator and comfort rest zones,” said Chad Hooker, Westfield Chartwell Centre Manager.

“We would like to thank the community, local neighbourhood, our retailers and staff for their support during the redevelopment and welcome everyone to our newly enhanced centre.”
