A New Look … A New Sound …and More Birds

Changes for Radio New Zealand

Radio New Zealand has announced changes to its corporate branding and on-air identity with the introduction of new logos for its networks and services.

The new look for Radio New Zealand will take effect from Monday 22nd January.

A name change for the National Radio and Concert FM networks will be introduced at the same time. National Radio will be known as Radio New Zealand National and Concert FM becomes Radio New Zealand Concert.

Existing names for Radio New Zealand News, Radio New Zealand International, and Radio New Zealand Sound Archives / Nga Taonga Korero are unchanged.

There are no major changes to programmes or schedules for Radio New Zealand National or Radio New Zealand Concert as a result of the new branding but the role of Radio New Zealand’s iconic bird calls has been enhanced. The birds will be heard more often, with better quality recordings, and the provision of spoken context for individual birdsongs.

In keeping with its role as the country’s national broadcaster, Radio New Zealand will also be supplementing the birdcalls with a broader range of the unique sounds which reflect New Zealand’s national identity.

Announcing the changes, Radio New Zealand Chief Executive, Peter Cavanagh, said it was important that all New Zealanders were aware of the full range of services provided by Radio New Zealand.

“While Radio New Zealand is recognised by most New Zealanders as one of the country’s most important cultural institutions, there are still a few people out there who confuse our radio networks with some of the commercial broadcasters.

“As a wholly independent and publicly-funded public service broadcaster, it’s important that people understand the full value of the services Radio New Zealand provides including our two national radio networks, National and Concert; our Pacific broadcasting service Radio New Zealand International and the national Sound Archives in Christchurch and Auckland.

“The extraordinary success of the Radio New Zealand website - which groups all of our services together and is now being used by hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders here and all over the world - has had a major influence on the new corporate branding.

“I believe the changes – both on-air and in our corporate branding – will remove any lingering confusion between Radio New Zealand and commercial radio outlets, allowing us to clearly reassert our vital role as a public service broadcaster in the world’s most competitive radio market.”
