Telecommunications Review makes switch to online

Telecommunications Review makes switch to online

Monday July 02, 2007

Freeman Media, publisher of The Line, has today launched a new website for Telecommunications Review.

Launched in 2003, Telecommunications Review, is regarded as the leading enterprise telecommunications and networking media in New Zealand. It boasts a circulation of over 2000 subscribers plus the three large telcos, and has won back-to-back TUANZ awards for Best Technology Media since 2004. The Line reached finalist status at these awards in each of these years.

Publisher Matt Freeman says the move to publish exclusively in digital makes sense for the company. "We were always going to launch a website for Telecommunications Review but the question was whether we would keep the print publication going," he says. "At the end of the day, we decided we can produce a better product for our readers and advertisers if we focus entirely online." Freeman says he believes other niche business titles will follow in its lead to abandon print.

The new site is developed and hosted in-house by Freeman Media on the open source Joomla! platform. Freeman says the experience the company has gained by developing its sites in-house has been invaluable. "We made a conscious decision to develop our products in-house and build up our own skillsets around digital," says Freeman. "To-date that has been the right move and we plan to continually improve and advance the sites we run, so it made sense to do it ourselves."

Freeman says the company's experience with The Line since it became a website had been a positive one. "We have experienced a healthy uplift in subscriptions to The Line of late, which we attribute to our solid search engine presence with sites such as Google," says Freeman. "Companies can access us through Google and request a free trial of our sites."

"We are now in a position of being able to re-invest in editorial," says Freeman.

The new Telecommunications Review site launches with nine technology sections : Networking, Datacentres, Unified Communications/VoIP, Infrastructure, Wireless, Distribution/Logistics, Conferencing. The company is running an ongoing project of loading up past issues to the site.

The two sites differentiate themselves by The Line specialising in high-level industry news, while Telecommunications Review takes a more broad look at enterprise end users and the products they use.

The new site is subscription-based and may be reached at http://www.secure.telecommunicationsreview.co.nz/. The publisher advises that for those that haven't logged in for the first time, they may wish to contact the office on +64 4 3850338. Free 2 week trials are available.

Freeman Media now publishes three technology websites - Telecommunications Review, The Line and m-net.net.nz. It employs seven full-time staff and has a turnover of $1 million per annum.
