Annual work stoppages decrease
Forty work stoppages ended in the March 2007 year, Statistics New Zealand said today. This compares with 66 stoppages for the March 2006 year. Stoppages in the March 2007 year involved less than half the number of employees (8,698) as in the March 2006 year, but had similar losses of person-days of work (25,589) and wages and salaries ($4.9 million).
In comparison, the 66 stoppages in the March 2006 year involved 18,791 employees, and losses of 32,762 person-days of work and an estimated $5.1 million in wages and salaries.
There were 30 complete strikes and 10 partial strikes that ended in the March 2007 year.
In the March 2007 quarter, eight work stoppages ended – seven complete strikes and one partial strike.
These involved 544 employees, and losses of 568 person-days of work and an estimated $0.1 million in wages and salaries.
