Maunsell takes two ACENZ awards

Maunsell takes two ACENZ awards

Maunsell has taken home building and environmental honours at this year’s Association of Consulting Engineers New Zealand (ACENZ) Awards, where engineering excellence is not limited to technical expertise but more about the sum of its parts to include environment, community and economic factors.

Maunsell won ACENZ’s 2007 Silver Award for their building and architectural services on the Tane Whakapiripiri – Forensic Maori Mental Health Unit located at the Mason Clinic in Mt Albert, Auckland. They also won the 2007 Community Award for the Weavers’ Pit Rehabilitation in Huntly, a geotechnical project that involved more than 13 years’ work.

Maunsell, Director, Northern Region, Dean Kimpton said it was an honour to walk away with two awards on the night particularly when both project wins resulted in improved community and environmental outcomes for New Zealand.

“Receiving industry accolades for Tane Whakapiripiri and Weavers Pit demonstrates the breadth of services we offer at Maunsell but also demonstrates how different engineering disciplines, both building and environmental, can make a difference to the community.

“Our work on Tane Whakapiripi involved designing a facility that combined a strong sense of Maori culture with the clinical needs of psychiatric staff and our client, the Waitemata District Health Board.

“Our buildings’ team incorporated cultural identity at the fundamental level by designing a layout to include the visible characteristics of a marae, comprising a whare hui (meeting house), a whare kai (dining house), patient wards, a clinical centre, and nurses' station.

“With Weavers’ Pit, our geotechnical team showed us once again why we lead the way in innovation and environmental planning, by devising a cost effective strategy for our client Solid Energy that would minimise instability as the former mine site was filled in to become a recreational lake.

“This was no small feat considering the competing issues of protecting a nearby rail line, preserving water quality and reducing impacts on surrounding communities during the lake filling and into the future.

“We devised a Risk Management Strategy for pit wall stability that resulted in significantly lower capital costs for the client while being a win for the environment and the community at the same time which is for us, what it’s all about,” Mr Kimpton said.

According to judges, it was the commitment and drive of Maunsell’s project teams combined with their flexible approach and innovative delivery, both on the Tane Whakapiripiri and Weavers’ Pit projects that secured success in this year’s ACENZ awards.
