Interislander celebrates 45th birthday

Today is an important day in history for Interislander, New Zealand’s leading Cook Strait ferry operator, as it celebrates a birthday today marking 45 years since the company began operations in August 1962.

With 92km of breathtaking views and a variety of onboard facilities, Interislander is really now one of New Zealand’s most iconic tourism activities as well as a leading provider of commercial vehicle and rail freight transport.

Group General Manager Seamus O’Sullivan says Interislander are proud of how far the company has come and the support received from the travelling public.

“We are recognised as a leading transport provider and that is a testament to the commitment from our staff to making Interislander a destination in itself for all travellers over the last four decades.”

For the last 45 years Interislander has been travellers chosen link between Wellington and Picton, and now carries 1 million passengers a year, 50% of which are international visitors.

The fleet includes three ships, Kaitaki, Arahura and the Aratere and up to 11 sailings a day, which all feature a range of quality onboard services.

Seamus O’Sullivan says this enables the company to cater to the diversity of travellers and their needs. “Our passengers have the convenience of choosing whether they wish to travel with the intimacy of a smaller ship with fewer passengers, or the bustling atmosphere of the Kaitaki for example, which is capable of carrying 1,600 people”

In addition, Interislander transports vehicles of all sizes and carries 280 thousand across the Cook Strait each year.

Seamus also says Interislander has worked hard at raising the level of on board service and delivery and is proud to offer every passenger a safe and enjoyable journey, every time they travel.

“We believe our level of service is a real point of difference and we are continuously improving to give both Kiwis and visitors an exceptional experience. We look forward to at least another 45 years as a leading and trusted transport experience”
