New Editor for The Press

MEDIA RELEASE
9 November 2007

New Editor for The Press

Respected Christchurch journalist Andrew Holden has been appointed the editor of The Press.

Mr Holden is currently deputy editor of the newspaper. He replaces Paul Thompson, who has been appointed group executive editor of Fairfax Media.

Mr Holden takes up the role on Monday, November 12.

Mr Holden, 47, has a proven track record in the newspaper industry, both in New Zealand and Australia. Before joining The Press in 2002, he held senior editorial roles with The Age in Melbourne.

The general manager of The Press, Chris Jagusch, said Mr Holden was the stand-out candidate from a strong field of applicants.

"I'm delighted with the appointment. Andrew has the skills and ability to ensure The Press continues to provide our readers with an excellent daily newspaper. He is an accomplished editorial executive, familiar with this region, who will set the highest standards for the newspaper."

Mr Holden said he was honoured by the appointment. "That may seem a cliché but The Press has a remarkable heritage and an exciting future. We have a great team right across the company, and through the paper and online we serve great communities in Christchurch and throughout the South Island."

The chief executive of Fairfax Media Joan Withers said Mr Holden was an excellent choice to be editor of one of New Zealand's finest newspapers. "Andrew is a talented and respected journalist who is well-equipped to ensure The Press continues to flourish and serve its communities well."
