Energy Mad offers carbon credits on Trade Me

Energy Mad offers carbon credits on Trade Me

26 May 2008

For the first time ever, voluntary carbon credits created by demand side energy efficiency projects are being offered to all New Zealanders. This provides the opportunity for individuals, families and businesses to go “carbon neutral”.

Christchurch based company Energy Mad uphold the goal to “lessen climate change through economical energy savings”. This has been achieved with the implementation of selected Ecobulb projects throughout New Zealand. Today Energy Mad, in partnership with Trade Me and The Marketplace Company (M-co Registry), listed six parcels of Verified Emission Reductions (VERs), or voluntary carbon credits, on the Trade Me auction site.

The listings differ in size and include three parcels tailored for individuals, two parcels tailored for your typical New Zealand family and one final parcel to suit a small business. The listings offer New Zealanders the opportunity to engage in the effort to combat climate change by purchasing carbon offsets and go “carbon neutral”.

Energy Mad CEO, Chris Mardon, is pleased to be able to help individuals and households completely offset their household emissions. “In our view, this is the best way individual New Zealanders can help combat climate change”.

Auction partners, Trade Me and the M-co Registry, provide an open and trustworthy framework for the sale and transfer of VERs. These listings will test the demand out there in the market and, based on the results, further listings will be considered.

Each Energy Mad VER comes with an electronic certificate with unique serial number attached. The successful bidders will have the option to either immediately retire the VERs and hence go “carbon neutral” or hold for retirement or sale at a later date. Each VER is equivalent to one tonne of carbon dioxide that was saved from being emitted to the earth’s atmosphere. The individual parcels consist of 10 VERs, the household parcels consist of 20 VERs and the small business parcel consists of 100 VERs.

The six auctions will close later this week. All enquiries about these listings should be directed through the Trade Me (www.trademe.co.nz) or Energy Mad Ecotrade (www.ecotrade.co.nz) websites.
