La Pachamama (“mother earth” in the ancient Quechua language) is the company that Gabriela and Daniel Pouwels launched in 2006 to import yerba mate tea from South America. Since that time their range of products has expanded to include more brands and other related artisanal products, including organic and free trade infusions and artisanal gift packs.

Yerba mate (pronounced: sher ba mä te) is a popular drink similar to tea, from South America. It is brewed from the dried leaves and stems of the plant Ilex Paraguayensis. The Guarani Indians drank it as a tea and for medicinal purposes. Later, the Jesuit monks passed the tradition on and made it known to the rest of the world. The drink has a taste similar to a mixture between green tea and coffee providing a valuable stimulus to the user without the negative side effects of coffee.

Like other teas, the leaves are dried, chopped, and ground into a powder (known as "yerba"). Unlike other teas, yerba mate is traditionally sipped from a hollow gourd (known as a “mate"), through a special straw called a bombilla (bom-bee-zha).

Yerba mate contains numerous vitamins and minerals including vitamins A, C, E, most of the Bcomplex, riboflavin, carotene, nicotinic and pantothenic acids, biotin, magnesium, calcium, iron, sodium, potassium, manganese, phosphates and small amounts of caffeine.

La Pachamama brings a variety of yerba mate brands and blends to satisfy different tastes, including a range of gourds and straws.
