Organics Aotearoa New Zealand (OANZ) is pleased at the Minister of Economic Development's decision, announced today, that OANZ will receive $1.04 million over three years to continue its promotion and support of New Zealand's organic sector.
"This assistance recognizes that certified organic production has an integral role to play in the future of New Zealand's primary sector", said Derek Broadmore, Chair of OANZ.
"OANZ was formed in 2006 and received seed funding from Government, which has enabled the multiple groups representing organics to work together, support research, education and trade, and represent New Zealand's organic sector internationally.
"The funding announced today will allow OANZ to continue leading an emerging sector towards its goal of growing New Zealand organics to a billion-dollar value.
"I would like to thank the Minister for acknowledging the innovation and creativity in the organic sector, as well as its potential contribution to economic development. Organics has great potential for contributing to economic development by delivering high value products alongside beneficial environmental impacts.
"Our best organic producers operate leading-edge systems which deliver environmental and economic sustainability. With this financial help from Government, OANZ is aspiring to reach the same level of permanence.
"Rising input prices, environmental concerns, and farmers looking to create the high-value food which is being demanded by international markets are among the factors generating a groundswell of interest in organics. Through our Organic Advisory Programme, OANZ will continue to provide information, advice and encouragement to producers thinking of switching to certified organics.
"OANZ looks forward to continuing its work in communicating the organic message, extending information about 'best practice' in sustainable farming and ensuring international market access for New Zealand's certified organic products", Mr Broadmore said.
