Top Global Packaging Award For NZ Printer

Top Global Packaging Award For New Zealand Printer

Auckland-based firm Logick Print & Graphics has put New Zealand on the global printing stage by winning a top prize at the world’s premier packaging awards in Monaco.

Logick was last night (subs: Thurs) awarded a prestigious Bronze Award for its NZ Rox Jewellery Box at the Pentawards -- the only worldwide competition exclusively devoted to packaging design in all its forms.

The stated mission of the Pentawards is to promote packaging design with companies, the press, the economic and political authorities and the public in general, throughout the world. Only one Diamond Pentaward (best of the show), five Platinum Pentawards (best of category) and a maximum of one Gold, two Silver and three Bronze Pentawards were awarded in about 40 sub-categories.

Winners came to Monaco from Asia, the Americas and Europe to receive their trophies at a glittering ceremony held alongside the Luxepack exhibition. In January, the winning designs will be presented in the heart of Paris in a completely new space dedicated to packaging design, the Pack Design Gallery.

Logick’s beautifully-crafted gold box with greenstone pendant -- which also earned a Supreme Finalist prize at this year’s New Zealand Pride In Print Awards -- took the judges’ eye in the “luxury” category, covering jewellery, watches and fashion garments.

Pentaward jury chairperson Gérard Caron said from Europe that the New Zealand entry was “very different” to any other packaging in the jewel market.

“The cardboard is used with intelligence,” he said. “The triangle shape with rounded sides is very attractive and looks like a jewel itself. The fact that the jewel is attached to the box is also remarkable.

“Shape, colour, graphics and use of metallic ink gives a mysterious look which is in perfect harmony with the jewel. Finally, the quality of the printing is excellent.”

A spokesperson for NZROX, for whom the box was created, said the packaging had proved a “roaring success” -- with sales increasing and people even interested in buying the box alone.

“The overall result was a package which completely met our initial vision for what we were seeking -- which is surprising perhaps because we had such high standards.

“In an immediate and direct visual way it tells the story of our product in a way we could never do with words. It is robust and portable for shipping, refined enough to offer a nice presentation package as a gift, and speaks strongly of New Zealand.

“We even have some customers wanting to buy only the package! I would estimate that the packaging solution we finally came to in partnership with [Logick] roughly doubles the sales of our carved Touchstone pendants,” he said.

New Zealand Pride In Print judges’ convenor Fraser Gardyne said that producing the 10,000 NZ Rox Jewellery Boxes required diecuts, creasing, embossing and several print passes to ensure a perfect print finish.

“This complex little package kept our judges fascinated as they studied how the delightful multi-faceted container clipped open and shut, perfectly housing the jewellery it was designed to present,” he said.

“The construction design and attention to detail by Logick is a lesson to us all. An absolutely superb result.”
