Be The Boss - Buy Yourself A Job!

Be The Boss - Buy Yourself A Job!

Maybe you have just been made redundant, or are keen to be your own boss and take control over your destiny. The New Year is often the time people feel motivated to make some major life changing decisions.

When these decisions involve your working life, you need to consider what you want and what you are prepared to do to get there. Whether it is buying a business or moving along the career path, it is all about “you” and deploying the skills and vision you have.

Buying a Business needn’t be a high cost high risk venture. There are hundreds of businesses and franchises out there that are low cost stable performers, providing flexible hours, rewarding work and a good income, with and without support. By owning your own business you get to decide what you will do, and when you will do it. You decide.

Once you have made the decision to go into business for yourself, the next aspect to consider is how to find the right business? It takes dedicated motivation and research on your part to identify the business that will best suit your requirements.

Make sure it is something you are passionate about and have a vision for. You will also need the necessary skills to add value and run a business; it is the value you add that customers will be paying for. If you already possess the necessary skills that this business requires then you are well on your way to owning the right business for you, but don’t be afraid of acquiring new skills to become an even "better fit" with the business.

For those who have no set ideas about the type of business they are looking for then it is best to narrow down the criteria before embarking on a search. Get in the habit of list making, and write down the things you enjoy, are good at, and that you will need to support your current needs. Build a profile of your strengths and list things you don’t enjoy doing and any weaknesses you may have. Determine how much you are prepared to risk, the hours you will work and its impact on your existing lifestyle. Write these things down, they will help you to stay focused while searching through the many possibilities.

A good tool to help you get started is to review the self-assessment article under "Buying a Business" on www.nzbizbuysell.co.nz

Passion and ability play a big part in making any business a success. Sometimes when the going gets tough - and odds are it will from time to time, you need the necessary energy to be able to get yourself up and going and make the right things happen to get your business back on track.

Ultimately you want to be in a business where you can utilise your skills, knowledge and experience, but remember, no matter how well you fit the business, it won’t be successful unless there is a demand for what it provides.

Remember to seek professional advice before buying any business or franchise and to look at a number of opportunities on websites and in news papers.
