Maunsell AECOM wins big in Bangladesh
The New Zealand business of leading engineering consultancy Maunsell AECOM will deliver critical transport and power infrastructure in Bangladesh after winning two major projects, the US$1.5 billion Padma Bridge and US$13 million Haripur power plant.
Regional Director Dean Kimpton said, “Maunsell AECOM New Zealand supported by Maunsell AECOM in Hong Kong will undertake the design of this class leading bridge and we are proud to be playing a role in the ongoing development of Bangladesh.”
The 5.58 km Padma Bridge will be the largest in Bangladesh, connecting the southwest region with the capital Dhaka and boosting business opportunities through the efficient movement of goods between the country’s second seaport, Mongla, and the rest of the country.
The bridge will provide a vital link that will cut travel times by several hours, carry a railway, 500kV power supply cables, communication infrastructure, as well as a major gas pipeline.
Bangladesh’s Communications minister, Syed Abul Hossain said, “The gross domestic product of the southwest will increase by two percent if the bridge is constructed”. This equates to around a 1.2% increase in the entire nation’s GDP.
This project will be delivered drawing on the resourcing and technical expertise of Maunsell AECOM team members across the region and associated team members Northwest Hydraulic Consultants Ltd, SMEC International Pty Ltd, ACE Consultants Limited, Aas Jakobsen and HR Wallingford Ltd.
Leading a joint venture for the
management and supervision of implementation of a new
gas-powered
360-megawatt combined cycle power plant at
Haripur, located 22 km south east of Dhaka, will also see
Maunsell AECOM alleviate serious power shortages in the
region.
As part of the four-year project, Maunsell AECOM will work in a joint venture, assisting the Electricity Generation Company of Bangladesh with the design and specification of all machinery and equipment through to the selection, appointment and supervision of a turnkey contractor for the construction, testing and commissioning of the plant.
Joint venture partners are SNC-Lavalin International Inc of Canada and SMEC International Pty Ltd of Australia, in association with Sargent & Lundy LLC of USA and ACE Consultants Ltd of Bangladesh.
“The delivery of these major infrastructure projects reflects the tremendous track record and class leading skills available in Maunsell AECOM and AECOM globally,” Mr Kimpton said.
