Common Sense Prevails with RMA Reforms

Media Release 5 February 2009

Common Sense Prevails with Resource Management Act Reforms

Leading exporter, Glidepath Group, which wants to retain its New Zealand manufacturing base for its automated airport baggage handling and security systems, has welcomed changes to the Resource Management Act as being “common sense, good for business and good for community development”.

“The RMA has been an obstacle to securing the premises we need to continue to manufacture here efficiently and cost effectively,” said Chairman and Managing Director, Ken Stevens, who is also Chairman of Export New Zealand. “We spent hundreds of thousands of dollars and countless hours trying to get zoning approval for factory premises to no avail. But, I now see a light. Common sense will prevail and my business will now be in a position where we can move ahead to consolidate our operations in West Auckland.”

Mr Stevens said the reforms would be welcomed by business and were also good for local communities as they provided greater certainty for infrastructure investment and employment.

“Hooray for the day that we have seen the extinction of cumbersome process, endless delays and unnecessary expenses and frustration in reworking plans when all we want to do is get on with the business and be viable. Glidepath exports to over 60 countries and is acknowledged as a world innovator in airport baggage handling systems but our home and heart is in West Auckland. Now we’ll be able to have all our operations in the one building, under one roof.”
