Broadband Roll Out Would Boost NZ Video Exports

Government plans to significantly improve high speed broadband in New Zealand could be a crucial component for high tech online export companies.

The founder of a New Zealand high quality film footage website, Graham Elliott, says the proposed $1.5 billion investment in broad band would significantly advantage online businesses providing high quality content to international buyers.

www.nzstockfootage.co.nz has just launched internationally after two years in research and development.

Graham Elliott says the website offers instant download speeds for HD quality footage for film and DVD producers and designers around the world.

He says New Zealand’s relatively slow download speeds compared to the rest of the world are currently clearly a disadvantage.

“High speed internet isn’t simply about people being able to download movies faster at home, there is a serious business opportunity at stake.”

Graham Elliott says the site has the potential to be New Zealand’s answer to highly successful international stock image sites such as Getty Images and iStock.

“There is no reason why we couldn’t rise to be a significant competitor to these sites with the aid of better quality broadband in New Zealand,” says Graham.

www.nzstockfootage.co.nz has already built a significant library of royalty free film and DVD clips that can be instantly downloaded at reasonable cost.

Graham Elliott says it’s a first in New Zealand as up until now professional video producers and film makers, web designers or anyone wanting good quality footage had to order it, wait for it to be delivered and pay a relatively high price for it.

nzstockfootage has libraries across a wide range of categories including infrastructure, health, sport, transport, as well as art directed shots with actors.

The website incorporates footage shot by New Zealand cinematographers throughout Australasia, the Pacific, Asia, the United States and Europe.
“We already know New Zealand has significant talent in the film and video industry. If we were to utilise international quality broadband to host sites such as ours, we would definitely be internationally competitive,” says Graham.

Footage from New Zealand is already highly thought of around the world off the back of quality productions such as Lord of the Rings.

“With growing demand for quality content for DVDs, presentations and online communication, there is a fantastic opportunity for New Zealand cinematographers and animators to become highly successful selling their video/film footage to global markets.”
