Excellent Vintage For Wine Labels

Excellent Vintage For Wine Labels

New Zealand wine labels are hitting new heights of design excellence, giving judges at this year’s Pride In Print Awards a headache in deciding which qualify for “top shelf” treatment.

The crop of entries from wine label printers was the largest ever for Pride In Print, and labels judge Ray Tansey of Christchurch says the standard was extremely high.

“We are seeing more embellishments such as foil and embossing and die cuts used in the labelling and more intricate detail. Designers are obviously putting more and more effort into raising the bar in terms of the look of the labels.

“The quality has become so good that we as judges are having to be more aggressive in deciding what labels are chosen for awards and what are discarded,” he said.

Awards Manager Sue Archibald said that wine labels entries had grown significantly since they were given their own section.

“We gave them special recognition a couple of years ago by making them a separate category and the response has been wonderful. The strong design feel has made this a very innovative and colourful area for the judges to adjudicate, and the competition is now the strongest ever.”

However printers who have entered labels such as these Partisan and Quest Farm labels from Central Otago and the Seifried Nelson 2008 Pinot Gris label will have to wait until May 8 to know if they can set the corks popping.

That is when the Pride In Print Awards Night will be held in Wellington, when hundreds of entrants from across all areas of print and packaging will know if they have been successful.

All winning work will be on display in the Wellington Convention Centre – in the heart of Wellington -- for five days after the Award winners are announced, and the Supreme Award Winner and Supreme Award Finalists will also be placed on display at the PacPrint 2009 exhibition in Melbourne in late May.
