Fly Buys makes giving easy in the recession

MEDIA RELEASE

Fly Buys makes giving easy in the recession

Fly Buys have come up with an innovative way for its 2.5 million Members to donate to charity in these cash-strapped times.

“Charities are struggling to raise money – New Zealanders are feeling the pinch and charities are too – so we are giving Kiwis the opportunity to donate their Fly Buys Points to KidsCan, which supports kids living in poverty,” says Chris Lamers, Head of Marketing and Product Development for Fly Buys.

Fly Buys is supporting KidsCan StandTall through the Big Night In Telethon 09, which airs August 8th and 9th.

“About 20 per cent of our Members have told us they want the option to give points to charity – and we also know that during tough economic times it can be difficult to find spare cash to give.”

The public can donate in two ways: by choosing to donate points to KidsCan to provide the basics for children in need, and by ordering a free, celebrity-designed Fly Buys card. Fly Buys will make a donation for each card ordered. Members who already have a card can return their old card to Fly Buys for recycling.

KidsCan is a charity that each year helps more than 28,000 primary school children throughout New Zealand get the most out of their education by providing them with the basics.

“Every week, across New Zealand, kids are arriving at the school gates hungry and cold, and it’s holding them back from fully participating at school. Nearly three quarters of all New Zealand households belong to Fly Buys so we saw huge potential to help raise funds for these kids.”

Within the first week of the promotion Fly Buys Members had made nearly 1,500 donations to KidsCan and already ordered 6,500 Star Cards.

“As well as encouraging Members to donate, we’re doing our bit too. Our fundraising efforts start this week with a whole series of old-school telethon dares, including the Fly Buys bosses being dared to jump, fully clothed, into Wellington harbour!

“Telethon was an iconic, Kiwi event 15 years ago, and by supporting the Big Night In, we’re helping our Members to make a real difference to thousands of children today, and tomorrow.”
