The Mt Smart Supertop Sells for $10

In what must be the bargain of the century, New Zealand’s iconic music venue, the Mt Smart Supertop, has sold today for just $10.

The tent went under the hammer at ‘no reserve’ and sold in less than 10 minutes to the Auckland buyer Mike Ransfield.

The auction, totalling 250 lots, bought in many surprises as the likes of amplifiers once owned by Chuck Berry fetched close to $1,000 each. The totals are still being tallied, but it is anticipated the total value of all items is more than $50,000.

It was a nostalgic day for former owner of the Supertop, Ray Channon, who has said farewell to what has been a huge part of his life since 1991.

“I’m actually really happy with the result. I decided to put it on a no reserve and to be honest the tent made $9 more than I thought it would,” he says.

Jason Tredgett of Turners Auctions says he and Ray always knew it would be dramatic, at either end of the scale. Jason estimates the new owner will spend at least $10,000 shifting the Supertop from its current location.

Ray is also farewelling concert memorabilia such as vintage posters from concerts held in NZ from the early 70s and 80s such as the Eagles, The Police, Tina Cross, Cliff Richards, The Osmonds, John Denver, Neil Diamond and Neil Young.

Turners will manage the sale of these via Trade Me and the auctions will run until Monday 29th February.
