Kiwi Rum Company Steals More World Class Honours

New Zealand’s own (and only) rum company has won its third international medal in six short months. Stolen Rum took a Silver Medal - Best in Class - for its Stolen White Rum at the prestigious International Wine and Spirits Competition in London last week.

This comes just a month after receiving high praise for its Stolen Gold Rum from the world’s most respected spirits bible. CLASS magazine described it as having “a buttery nose with appely notes and cinnamon spice aromas,” earning it a covetable four stars.

In March the same rum picked up a Double Gold medal at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Awards, with its sibling Stolen White Rum collecting a bronze – unheard of success for such a young brand.

Stolen Rum was created last year by two friends - Jamie Duff and Roger Holmes – modern day rum-runners of the South Pacific who ditched their day jobs and travelled to the Caribbean in search of the secret to developing world-class rum.

The result is a selection of premium rums based on century-old recipes that are described by the pair as having a smoother finish, delicate taste and a well-rounded landing, restoring rum to its rightful place as the world’s greatest spirit.

Both in their early 30s, Duff and Holmes are overwhelmed by the response to Stolen Rum.

“It’s been amazing. We started Stolen Rum because we wanted to bring the romanticism of rum into the modern day, and world class rums to the people of New Zealand and the world,” says Jamie. “The medals confirm our rum is good, so we can get on and do our job.”

The Stolen Boys say part of that job is bringing their award-winning Stolen White Rum to females in particular – challenging the increasingly tired vodka category.

Stolen Rum is available in bars around New Zealand including Racket, Gypsy Tea Room, Long Room, Chapel, Cassette Number Nine and Neighbourhood (Auckland), Matterhorn, Hooch, Hawthorn Lounge and Motel (Wellington). For more details, please visit: www.stolenrum.com.

Pattrick Smellie Comment: Doddling along the best we can hope forCriticising Budgets for lacking vision or imagination is like shooting fish in a barrel, but even so, this year's Budget again feels like a missed opportunity. Perhaps it's the intrusion of real world needs that means the government couldn't make better political use of the $558.8 million it expects to gather in its first partial asset sale. More >>
