Wellington Broker Carries on Award-Winning Way

Wellington Broker Carries on Award-Winning Way

Mike Pero Mortgages’ Wellington broker Darren Lawson has added to his awards collection, winning Broker of the Year for the Wellington region at the recent New Zealand Mortgage Brokers Association (NZMBA) Broker of the Year Awards.

Darren Lawson is no stranger to winning awards, but he says taking out Broker of the Year for Wellington is particularly special.

“Having been nominated as a finalist for 2010 Broker of the Year was a great honour in itself. But winning this award was the result of a lot of hard work, as I sold my Auckland franchise and moved down to Wellington only 18 months ago,” he says.

“As far as clients went in Wellington, I just didn’t have any. I had to start from scratch, which required networking, advertising and talking to everybody I could about what I actually do. I also bought a small database from an existing franchise owner which helped a little, but with the market being at all time low, I had to work harder, faster and more tirelessly to get deals over the line.”

The NZMBA conference was held in Auckland last week and Mike Pero Mortgages Chief Executive says he was very proud of the company’s achievements at the awards function.

“We were thrilled to have five brokers nominated and to see Darren Lawson take out the Broker of the Year for the Wellington region was very gratifying,” he says.

“Darren has done a fantastic job in the Wellington area in a short space of time and this award serves as recognition of the way he runs his business and his commitment to his clients.”

Darren Lawson says his nomination for the award was a rigorous process, involving a substantial presentation and phone interview. He says he was looking forward to the awards function, as all the hard work had already been done.

“How wrong was I! I was a little nervous on the night, but was extremely happy and surprised to be named the winner for the Wellington region. I hate public speaking at the best times, but I was at a loss for words when I was actually presented with the trophy.”

He says he has no regrets about his move south to Wellington, as setting up a successful franchise in the capital has been challenging and very rewarding.
