Turners & Growers Serving Up New Zealand’s Best

Turners & Growers Serving Up New Zealand’s Best Produce At Asia Fruit Logistica

Turners & Growers will be serving up a selection of New Zealand’s best fresh produce to international supermarket buyers, consumers and media at ASIA FRUIT LOGISTICA, Asia’s leading trade show for the international fresh fruit and vegetable business, which gets underway in Hong Kong on September 8.

New Zealand’s largest diversified horticultural company, Turners & Growers and its subsidiaries ENZA and Delica will have an impressive stand showcasing New Zealand tomatoes, oranges, lemons, new apple varieties JAZZ™ and ENVY™ and ENZA’s globally grown kiwifruit varieties at the expo that last year attracted more than 3,400 of the global produce industry’s movers and shakers from 52 countries.

Turners & Growers Managing Director, Jeff Wesley and Chairman Tony Gibbs will both be attending ASIA FRUIT. Jeff Wesley says the Expo is a vital opportunity for New Zealand to showcase the very best of its fresh produce to the rapidly expanding Asian markets.

“As the Prime Minister said during his visit to China in June, there are enormous opportunities for New Zealand in Asia and we are ambitious in our goals for increasing the market for our premium fresh produce to boost New Zealand’s horticultural industries.”

“There are over 300 stalls at this year’s ASIA FRUIT, so you’ve got to stand out. That means a high-quality stand with premium, new and innovative products to attract the leading buyers.

“ENZA has such a strong brand internationally as a fruit innovator and we’re building on that again this year. We’re seeing rapid growth for ENZA’s new apple varieties JAZZ™ and ENVY™ in the Asian markets. ENVY™ is a striking red fruit and the first apple in the world with naturally non-browning flesh and we expect it to attract a lot of attention.”

ENVY™ is ENZA’s newest apple variety that’s finding favour amongst consumers across Asia, with New Zealand grown ENVY™ apples now selling in China, Thailand, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia and Hong Kong. New Zealand apples are not sold in Japan due to the prohibitive cost of meeting Japan’s phytosanitary requirements.

“ENZA is also setting up strategic alliances with apple growers in Korea to grow ENZA varieties to provide counter-seasonal supply to Korea, which does not allow foreign apple imports.”

ENZA is also developing its global growing platform for new kiwifruit varieties to meet customer demand. “Demand for ENZARed kiwifruit in China is explosive and we’re seeing rapid growth in ENZA kiwifruit in Japan and Korea, two of the most important fruit markets in the world.”

Media last year named ENZARed kiwifruit ‘most exciting new product’ at the show and Jeff Wesley says he is expecting a similar buzz about ENZA kiwifruit this year as ENZA will be showing ENZAPink, a new pink-fleshed kiwifruit under development, to selected customers at ASIA FRUIT.

Delica has built its reputation and growth on the supply of the highest quality produce into Asian markets, creating demand for premium products from discerning clientele. Jeff Wesley says Delica’s approach is an example of how other New Zealand producers can ‘punch above their weight’ in offshore markets by moving away from selling commodities to become the suppliers of choice to the top end of the Asian markets.

Greexit, Eurogeddon... watch out... flight to quality and all that. Follow your instincts. Perhaps it's the intrusion of real world needs that means the government couldn't make better political use of the $558.8 million it expects to gather in its first partial asset sale. More >>
