Trinity Hill Scores More Precious Metal

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE OCTOBER 5 2010

Trinity Hill Scores More Precious Metal For Their Trophy Cabinet!

A trophy for Champion Sweet Wine of the Show has just been awarded to Trinity Hill Wines of Hawke’s Bay at the New Zealand International Wine Show for their absolutely sublime Gimblett Gravels Noble Viognier 2009. Concentrated aromas of apricot, musk and orange blossom and a nectar-like texture with a subtle smoky nuance is what the judges said as this luscious sweetie comfortably led the competition at the largest wine show in the country.

ut the gold medals didn’t stop there. Trinity Hill’s The Gimblett’ 2008 (a traditional Bordeaux red blend) wowed the judges with its sumptuous creamy backbone, firm, mouthfilling tannins, violets, plums, cigar and cedar and their multi-medal-winning Gimblett Gravels Tempranillo 2008 added another gold to its hefty tally. Smoky, oaky, savoury and dense, strawberry and cranberry fruit, tobacco, orange peel, tangy spices, supple tannins and a long, lifted savoury finish were just a few of the judges descriptors.

Also this week, news broke that Trinity Hill had secured a mighty haul of 13 medals at the Hawke’s Bay A&P Mercedes-Benz Wine Awards. It can now be revealed that Trinity Hill also scored gold medals for their Hawke’s Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2010 and their Gimblett Gravels Chardonnay 2008 at New Zealand’s only regional wine show, a tough show where medals of any colour are extremely hard-won according to Rod McDonald, Chairman of Judges.

John Hancock CEO of Trinity Hill Wines has been watching the results roll in from afar, Europe and the USA to be exact. His travels included attending the High End Initiative launch known as complexity in Denver Colorado.

Complexity brings together 21 of New Zealand’s great wineries to establish New Zealand’s credentials in the world of fine wine, and the 59 fine wines in the Complexity portfolio showcase the diverse nature of New Zealand’s eight great wine growing regions. Complexity was a huge success says John. It was by a great distance, the best New Zealand wine event that I have ever seen a great, great event and a big milestone for NZ wine.

Gathering together around an enormous wooden table laser-cut into the exact outline of New Zealand, all the wine producers were able to show guests exactly whereabouts in the country that their wines originate. Over sixty of the most influential players in the US wine industry enjoyed some of the best New Zealand has to offer in terms of fine wine and cuisine including the kiwi classic - sausage rolls!

Event feedback has been fantastic, It was fun, thoughtful and informative. Bravo Bravo!” says Joe DeLissio of New York City’s River Café and the praise continued from Nicole Kosta of San Francisco’s Mandarin Oriental It was so great to meet you and what a truly inspiring event!! I knew NZ wines were great… I definitely was surprised to see many wines that I had never tried before or even heard of, and I look forward to growing the NZ section of my list.

Trinity Hill has also impressed Hugues Lepin, head sommelier at one of London’s great hotels, The Connaught where he has listed The Trinity Hill Gimblett Gravels Syrah, The Homage and the High Country Pinot Noir. Lepin has also listed Trinity’s Sancerre-style sauvignon blanc Metis, the result of an exciting joint venture with France’s Pascal Jolivet at the Espelette restaurant, the Connaught’s all day dining room. Metis will also soon be listed on the Claridges Banqueting list and at The Berkley. Hugues Lepin was formerly head sommelier at London’s 3-star Michelin restaurant Ducasse and at the Bleeding Heart.

Pattrick Smellie Comment: Doddling along the best we can hope forCriticising Budgets for lacking vision or imagination is like shooting fish in a barrel, but even so, this year's Budget again feels like a missed opportunity. Perhaps it's the intrusion of real world needs that means the government couldn't make better political use of the $558.8 million it expects to gather in its first partial asset sale. More >>
