HSBC Joins In WWF’S Earth Hour 2011

HSBC Joins In WWF’S Earth Hour 2011

HSBC offices in 60 countries switched off their lights this year to show support for WWF’s Earth Hour.

The annual campaign led by WWF called upon individuals and businesses across the world to switch off their lights for one hour on Saturday March 26 at 8.30pm local time. HSBC sees that this symbolic act helps raise awareness about over-consumption of the world’s resources.

This year, HSBC offices and branches in over 60 countries across the globe participated in the big switch off, with employees showing their personal support by signing up to the campaign at www.earthhour.org and running various awareness-raising events for both colleagues and customers.

Simon Martin, Head of HSBC Group Corporate Sustainability, said: “For HSBC, Earth Hour is a way of increasing awareness among our employees, customers and the wider public of the continued importance of consuming our resources responsibly. Climate change remains a clear challenge to society and it is vital that we all play our part in responding to that challenge.”

Both locally and across the globe, HSBC employees demonstrated their commitment to Earth Hour 2011, not only by switching off their lights but also by taking part in various initiatives such as environmental quizzes, Earth Hour pledges and photo competitions. Colleagues were also encouraged to ‘go beyond the hour’ by committing to longer-term actions that will benefit the environment.
