Joint Communiqué New Zealand Papua New Guinea Trade Mission 2011

This is a joint communiqué of the New Zealand Papua New Guinea and Papua New Guinea New Zealand Business Councils who have been working to grow partnerships of value between Papua New Guinea and New Zealand.

The trade mission, comprising 27 companies from New Zealand led by the Hon John Hayes MP, Chairman of the New Zealand Foreign Affairs Defence and Trade Select Committee and Mr. Stephen Eagle, Chairman of the New Zealand Papua New Guinea Business Council, arrived in Port Moresby on Sunday 10th April 2011 and were hosted by the Papua New Guinea New Zealand Business Council and the Port Moresby Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

This joint communiqué advises the principal outcomes of the trade mission, which were:

That the trade mission achieved its objectives of enabling greater co-operation and partnership between the Papua New Guinea and New Zealand private sectors

That reciprocal trade missions will be undertaken on a regular basis in the future

That the re-establishment of the Papua New Guinea New Zealand Business Council in Port Moresby, led by Mr. Gary Haora was successful

That the Papua New Guinea Government has invited the development of a double taxation agreement between the two countries

That the Papua New Guinea Government will consider placing a trade officer in the office of the Pacific Islands Trade and Investment Cooperation via the Papua New Guinea High Commission in Wellington

That the Papua New Guinea Government will participate in the Pacific Forum and Rugby World Cup activities in September 2011

That the trade mission businesses have successfully engaged with Papua New Guinea companies, and that mutual business is being written

That numerous discussions have taken place between potential trading partners during the mission

The participation and co-operation of the two governments and the private sector in Port Moresby is highly appreciated by the business councils, who gratefully acknowledge their principal sponsor, Carpenters Shipping.

Media: Quickflix welcomes probe of Sky TV content deals
ASX-listed Quickflix has welcomed the New Zealand antitrust regulator's probe into Sky Network Television's content deals with internet service providers, saying the issues raised by the Commerce Commission are "serious and real."

Sky's shares sank 8.3 percent to a two-and-a-half month low $5 after the regulator said it will investigate the pay-TV operator's contracts with ISPs and potential barriers to accessing content. The announcement was made after the commission approved a joint venture between Sky and state-owned Television New Zealand to launch a budget pay-TV platform, Igloo.More >>

Fruit FlyMPI: No Fruit Fly Outbreak Detected to Date as Actions Continue
The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) reports that testing on samples from fruit fly traps in the Auckland Controlled Area has so far shown no sign of further fruit flies.

However as a precautionary measure, the Ministry continues a large field effort to ensure that if any of the pest insects are present, they are not able to spread from the Avondale area where the one male fly was found last week.
