New headquarters for Hospice Charity

The Mary Potter Hospice is amalgamating its various operations in Porirua and Tawa into a new all-in-one headquarters in Porirua.

The hospice has taken on the lease on a part of a 1314 square metre building in Prosser Street, which will see the organisation shift its office space from Kenepuru Hospital, relocate its current warehousing facilities from Tawa, and open a new 200 square metre retail outlet selling donated goods.

The new and bigger Prosser Street warehousing facility will also supply the charity’s retail outlets in Kilbirnie, Miramar, Paraparaumu, Tawa and Karori.

Mary Potter Hospice has signed a six year lease for the Prosser St premises, with two further rights of renewal for three years, it also includes 12 car parks. The lease was brokered by Bayleys Wellington Commercial and Industrial specialist Jon Pottinger.

Work on refurbishing the Prosser Street premises is expected to be completed by the end of August. Office space in the building will occupy 510 square metres – with wheelchair access to be built at the front of the building.

The Mary Potter Hospice is one of Wellington's most-loved charities - providing hospice services to hundreds of people and their families every year throughout the Wellington, Porirua and Kapiti regions.

Mr Pottinger said the lease negotiations for the site involved a considerable amount of delicate negotiations – with the charity wanting to ensure the best deal possible, while realizing that it would have to pay a fair market rate. This was taken into account by the property’s owner, Scettrini Investments Ltd, which was sympathetic to the charitable nature of the tenant.

“In the end it was a win/win scenario for both parties. The hospice will be housed in totally refurbished facilities with the potential to not only operate more efficiently with the new warehousing facility, but also to generate greater revenues from a new retail outlet,” Mr Pottinger said.

“And the community-spirited landlord has a highly reputable tenant in place with a long secure lease period, underpinned by the reassurance that in its own way, the company is ‘doing its bit’ to support the charitable intentions of the hospice organisation.”
