Opus Focussed on Innovation and Growth

Infrastructure provider, Opus International Consultants, has made two new senior appointments, one to its top technical engineering role, and the other to lead its strategic growth.

Dr Sulo Shanmuganathan has been appointed to the role of Chief Technical Officer. In her new position, Dr Shanmuganathan will take a leading role in ensuring engineering best practice is maintained across the business and that technical innovation is to the fore.

Having recently returned from Opus’ Sydney office to take up the position, Dr Shanmuganathan has extensive experience in a range of large scale civil infrastructure projects in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. She has been the leading civil and structural engineer for many complex and innovative engineering projects, including Auckland’s Britomart Rail and Transportation Centre, The Esmonde Road interchange upgrade in Auckland, and Stadium Australia in Sydney.

Opus Chief Executive, Dr David Prentice says that Dr Shanmuganathan has developed a flair for achieving innovative engineering solutions and a worldwide reputation for excellence. “We are delighted to appoint Sulo to this newly created technical role. She is a proven leader in her field and is an asset to both Opus and the engineering profession.”

Former General Manager for New Zealand Operations, James Phillis, has been appointed to the other newly created position of Director Strategy and Growth, based in Sydney. Mr Phillis, who joined Opus in 2000, is a Chartered Professional Engineer, and has a background in business management, project management and chemical engineering.

“This new position has been created to enable us to take a more focussed and strategic approach to broadening our global business,” says Dr Prentice. “Opus has undergone substantial growth and geographical expansion over the past decade. This role will focus on creating new opportunities to take the business to its next level of development, servicing wider markets and populations with our unique infrastructure development and management capabilities.”

“With his huge wealth of knowledge and experience, James was an obvious choice for this position,” says Dr Prentice. “Having worked across infrastructure development in the resources, manufacturing and chemical engineering industries in Australia, China and South East Asia, he will lead our diversification in to these markets.”
