AMI Says Govt Offer Will Be Welcomed by Many in Chch

Biggest Insurer of Christchurch Homes Says Govt Offer Will Be Welcomed by Many

“Yesterday’s announcement is a very positive step in the recovery in Canterbury,” says AMI Chief Executive John Balmforth. “It gives people certainty and we’re pleased to play our part in that process.

“We’ve been working in the residential red zones since September and are currently completing a large number of detailed assessments in order to progress claims for earthquake damage to homes. Yesterday’s announcement means we’ll now also be working with the Government as we work through the process for customers who pursue the option of receiving the Government settlement for their land, but seek settlement with AMI for their house.

“We are very aware that one size does not fit all, and we encourage policy holders to ask us for information about their particular situation and the insurance cover on their home, as part of the process they should go through in evaluating their options,” he said, noting that the Government’s offer is open for acceptance for nine months.

Mr Balmforth says the timeframes set by the Government mean AMI will increase its resources in the red zones to complete all necessary detailed assessments by September.

Following the first earthquake on 4 September 2010 the company established a dedicated Earthquake Recovery Team in conjunction with earthquake recovery partner Arrow International, now involving 200 people, so that the company is well able to respond to the announcements yesterday

The ‘backstop’ capital arrangement announced by the Government in April ensures that AMI can meet all valid claims.
