GFG Group ramps up activity in Vietnam

Auckland. 07 December 2011. International payments software and services company GFG Group Ltd has appointed Thank Truong to the position of Regional Sales Manager, based in Ho Chi Minh City.

Miguel Warren, GFG Group’s Vice President Sales, Asia, says the appointment of Thank Truong reflects strong demand for GFG’s mobile and card payments software in the rapidly developing Vietnamese market.

"GFG Group has been active in Vietnam for several years and we are delighted to be able to make an appointment of such high calibre to provide support to our existing clients and partners and to help drive new business opportunities in the country.

“Thank brings a wealth of local experience and great breadth and depth of payments industry expertise to GFG Group and is an excellent fit for our strategy to give more banks and mobile operators in Vietnam the opportunity to offer cutting-edge electronic payment solutions to customers via their cards and mobiles,” Warren says.

Thank Truong has worked in the IT, e-payment and card payment industries for high-profile companies including HiPT, VinaPay, and MK Group. While working for Vietnamese start-up VinaPay, Truong was responsible for deploying an airtime top up, online and mobile payment service platform for the company. He also helped MK Smart Card Manufacturer to gain the GSM Association's SAS (Security Accreditation Scheme) certificate. Prior to joining GFG Group, Truong was a solution sales team leader for MK Group where he worked closely with many well-known companies in the card industry – including Datacard, Gemalto and Otto Kunnecke.

Vietnam has a population of over 86 million people and it is estimated that as much as 71 percent of the population is unbanked. However, the country has a burgeoning ICT sector and statistics show mobile phone penetration is relatively high.

“What is clear is that Vietnam could benefit highly from the development of cutting-edge electronic payment solutions that can be used in a branchless banking environment– for example, offering financial services via mobile phone – and it appears that there is great potential for banking beyond branches in the country,” Warren says.

“It has been observed in most emerging economies that card and mobile payment solutions bring convenience and security to customers, while contributing to the development of the country by increasing financial inclusion and economy growth. GFG Group, with its unique convergent solution for card and mobile payments, is very well placed to support the banks and MNOs to launch innovative electronic payment solutions successfully.”
