Treasury release: January 2012 Monthly Economic
Indicatiors (MEI)
The January Monthly Economic
Indicators (MEI) was published on the Treasury Website
today at 2.00pm. The report provides a summary of recent
economic events.
• Real GDP growth was strong in
September quarter but stock build-up and downward revisions
to previous quarters were of concern
• Rugby World Cup
had limited impact as activity was displaced as we expected,
but full impact yet to be recorded
• Outlook for 2012
has deteriorated since the Pre-election Update largely owing
to an escalation of the euro area crisis and its impact on
New Zealand

Pattrick Smellie Comment: Doddling along the best we can hope forCriticising Budgets for lacking vision or imagination is like shooting fish in a barrel, but even so, this year's Budget again feels like a missed opportunity. Perhaps it's the intrusion of real world needs that means the government couldn't make better political use of the $558.8 million it expects to gather in its first partial asset sale. More >>
