Flowers for Valentine’s Day more popular than ever!

And while red roses are synonymous with the day of love, flowers sellers throughout the country have also noted a trend towards arrangements of mixed blooms as Kiwis rush to place orders for flowers to declare true love and enduring affection.

“Kiwis are spoilt for choice with the variety of fresh flowers available and many are choosing to mix roses with other flowers or select blooms that also send the message of love such as lilies, tulips, orchids, carnations and sunflowers”, says Deborah Delaney, spokesperson for the National Flower Promotion Group.

Many of the retailers NFPG spoke to were overwhelmed with online, telephone and walk-in orders and too busy to talk for long but the overall message was clear – fresh flowers are the preferred gift for Valentine’s Day with customers happily spending $20 for a beautifully wrapped single rose, around $60 for a mixed arrangement and up to $195 for a dozen long stemmed roses and foliage arranged in a vase and delivered to their beloved.

And given that the leap year is traditionally a time when women can propose, this may be the reason some retailers have noticed an increase in the number of women sending flowers to men.
