Workers join picket at Ports of Auckland as strike begins
Maritime Union of New Zealand media release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Friday 24 February 2012
Ports of Auckland workers started their strike this morning at 7am by attending a large meeting at the Maritime Club in Anzac Avenue, Auckland.
The workers are putting on a round the clock picket at the port that will run for the strike period following the conclusion of this morning's meeting.
Maritime Union National President Garry Parsloe says there is a resolute mood amongst members.
"Members are very aware of the issues, the contracting out and casualization that threatens their jobs and their families livelihoods."
He says upcoming strike notices could be withdrawn if the port management drops plans to contract out jobs.
Supporters are welcome to join port workers at any time on their picket at Teal Park on Tamaki Drive.
Families are being invited to come down during weekends where there will be entertainment, activities and something to eat.
A new donation line 0900OURPORT had been set up where supporters of the workers could call to make an automatic $5 donation.
