Reappointment of the Government Statistician
Geoff Bascand has been reappointed as Government Statistician for a further three years, until May 2015. Geoff has been in the position since May 2007 and was previously the Deputy Government Statistician responsible for Macro-economic, Environment, Regional, and Geography Statistics.

He has previously worked in the Treasury and the Department of Labour in New Zealand, as an economist at the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC, and been a research fellow at the Centre of Policy Studies at Monash University in Australia.

Economic News

On 4 April Statistics New Zealand is releasing a new publication called Economic News.

The articles it contains will add depth to existing data and provide analysis of different types of economic data in a non-technical way.

Topics in this issue will include the Rugby World Cup, labour market performance during the recession, trade with Asia, and patterns in sales of hi-tech goods.
Media conferences April 2012
All media conferences are held at Statistics House, Harbour Quays, Wellington. The conference room opens at 10:00am. The embargo lifts and journalists can leave at 10:45am. No entry to the room after 10:30am please. For conferences marked with an S, a spokesperson will be present to answer questions. For the others, the conference is an opportunity to read the release under embargo.
