NZ writer scoops major US award

Gary Dickson, a New Zealand travel writer and Editor @ Large of Let's Travel Magazine was chosen from over 160 entries at the International Pow Wow travel writer awards with his article on San Francisco.

Gary accepted the Best International Pow Wow 2011 Host City Article from the founders of City Pass who sponsor this prestigious travel writers annual awards event! The event was held on 24 April 2012 in Los Angeles, the host city for Pow Wow 2012, among some 6,000 delegates.

Gary's article 'Flowers in my Hair' related a first-hand account of the history of music that San Francisco is famous for.

"It was my first ever visit to San Francisco, so to be able to visit some of the most revered music sites and write about them was extra special," said Gary. "I'd always wanted to visit the Haight Asbury district, the Fillmore Theatre and North Beach and, as a music buff, the tour I experienced hit all the right musical notes.”

In true hippy style, Gary boarded The Magic Bus tour that promotes itself as not just a tour ... it's a trip (man!!). Gary commented, "It is, without a doubt, the best 90 minutes of nostalgia, romance, heartbreak and fun I have had on a group tour for a long time."

"Let's Travel Magazine is a bi-monthly glossy publication that was established only three years ago so it is especially pleasing for our small publishing team to win such a major travel writing award," added Gary.

Editor-in-Chief and publisher, Gayle Dickson, was delighted with the coup. “For a relatively new publication from little old NZ to win such a prestigious award is a real feather in our caps. It’s only taken us 17 issues to be noticed on the global stage, so imagine what’s in store with future issues!”

The award sponsored by City Pass USA included a cheque for US$1000.00. “I’m just hoping that it hasn’t been spent over the bars of Los Angeles in celebration – mind you, knowing Gary, he’d turn that into a great story, too!”

Gary's article appeared in the Aug/Sep issue of Let's Travel Magazine. To read the article, please go online to find it under the Escape section at www.letstravelmag.com
